The Importance of Doing What You Love for the Right Reasons

My experience
When I was around sixteen, I would do kickboxing classes three times a week for three hours each. I loved it and pushed myself to the limit. But then, one day, I stopped going.

I gave up on the sport I got discouraged by family and didn’t have the confidence to keep going. I told myself I would do it when I was older, not realizing there was a time limit to doing martial arts or MMA professionally.

It’s too late.
Before I knew it was too late, I was twenty-seven when I got back into it seriously. I was distraught that I missed my opportunity to go pro. However, I still dabbled in martial arts.

I didn’t understand why till I finally realized I enjoyed practicing it, and the result was not the goal. Sure, I could not be the best in the world, but I could be the best I can be.

The realization
I could not make it a career, but I can make it a hobby. Something I do for fun, So you are never too old to do martial arts. It’s your reason that you do it that changes.

You can’t be the best in the world in everything you do, and no life is a perfect life. There are mistakes you are going to make along the way and regrets you are going to have.

What matters is that you eliminate the things you don’t enjoy doing in life and arrange your life so you do more of what you do love doing. That is how you become a better and more fulfilled person.

The why
The reasons you do something are essential, and they can affect the outcome of the activity, whether you keep doing it or give up. If you were running to save someone’s life, you would run much faster than you run for exercise.

The reason why you do martial arts is critical. If you do it to beat someone up and don’t enjoy it, you will quit; however, if you do, because you love and don’t care about beating someone up. The result will be very different, and you will do it for a longer time.

So before you start doing anything in life, whether it is a job or a hobby or starting a relationship. Think long and hard about the reasoning for it. It will make you a better and happier person.

Don’t ever give up

The discovery

Sometimes in life, we discover something that not only sparks our interest but also has the potential to impact the world significantly. Whether it is a great business idea that could make a lot of money or a scientific breakthrough that could change many people’s lives, we feel a sense of excitement and curiosity when we stumble upon such discoveries.

My experience

I had a similar experience when I was in high school. I discovered eBay back then, an online marketplace where people could buy and sell almost anything. I was fascinated by the idea of e-commerce and how it could connect buyers and sellers from different parts of the world.

One day, I discovered I could buy video games wholesale on eBay and sell them back on eBay individually at a profit. It was a brilliant opportunity to make extra money and have fun simultaneously. I did some research and calculated the costs and benefits of this venture. I was confident that I could make it work.

I told my mom about it, hoping that she would support me. However, she disagreed with me making so much money at a young age. She said I should focus on my studies and not waste my time. She also said I was too young to understand the complexities and challenges of running a business.

I was disappointed and hurt by her reaction. I tried to explain to her that this was not just a hobby but a potential career path for me. I showed her the evidence and the numbers that proved my idea was feasible and profitable. But she would not listen to me. She said she knew what was best for me and that I should trust her judgment.

I gave up on the business idea and stopped doing it, looking back at it now. I regret that decision. What would have happened if I had pursued my passion and followed my intuition? Maybe I would have been successful and happy. Perhaps I would have learned valuable skills and experiences that would have helped me in the future. Perhaps I would have made a difference in the world of e-commerce.

Lesson learned

The point is never to let anyone stop you, whether it is family, friends, or strangers. I know it is hard to decide what advice to take and what advice to dismiss. But when you have that spark or brilliant idea, you must pursue it no matter what.

Solution

It is hard to believe in yourself when your idea is just in the beginning stages, and you are still determining whether you will succeed or fail. But you have to remember that every great discovery or invention started with a simple idea. And every successful person faced obstacles and doubts along the way.

The key is to be persistent and resilient. To keep learning and improving. To seek feedback and support from others who share your vision or have done something similar before. To overcome the challenges and celebrate the achievements.

You never know when you might discover something that could change your life or the world for the better. So don’t let anyone or anything stop you from pursuing your dreams. You have the power to make them come true.

How to make a million dollars guaranteed

Follow your passion

You will never have a million dollars unless you follow your passion. I met a young adult who was about 18 years old. I asked him what does he want to do with his life? He said he wanted to play golf. However, his father wants him to go into the family plumbing business.

I told him he would never have a million dollars going into his family business. Sure, he might come into a substantial amount of money, but eventually, he would burn out, realize he doesn’t enjoy what he is going, quit and lose everything.

It’s hard

Since we are all unique, there that something that we enjoy doing more than anything else. It might be playing basketball or writing or whatever. That special talent is going to make you a million, nothing else.

It’s hard because we might feel the pressure of our peers to follow the status quo. To do what everyone else is doing. But only some people are following their passion. If we do what everyone else is doing, we will get the results everyone else is getting—very few people because finally independent or wealthy.

Talent

There is no particular industry or job that will get you there. It’s hard to figure out what to do when you are young. A successful pizza maker said to me once when I told him I didn’t know what I wanted to do for a living. He said to start with not doing what I don’t like. It is a simple philosophy, but it worked.

Warren Buffett said he met many people at the end of their life who said they would have followed their passion more when they were young. However, he met very few people who wished they had chased money more.

Chasing the money

If you chase the money and don’t burn out before you get to the million dollars, you will spend it on things that make you fulfilled and happy, and before you know it, the money will be gone. The only solution is to double down on your passion. Even if you do not make a million, you will still be happy at the end of the day. The greatest wealth is health.

The day I discovered my purpose in life.

There was a time in my life when I needed a purpose or direction on what to do. I spent a long time chasing money by doing jobs I did not necessarily enjoy. But I did them because I thought they would make me rich, which would solve all my problems.

At one point, I made about ten thousand dollars a month and was as miserable as ever. It was then I realized the amount of money you have does not equal how happy you are. You can only buy so many material things. I spent the next ten years not knowing what to do with myself.

I was always into martial arts and enjoyed practicing them. However, when I realized I was too old to do anything significant in the sport. I got depressed. I spent the next few years drifting through life, not doing anything important and doing random jobs, and being down.

Then it happened right when I was ready to give up on life and spend the rest of my life getting drunk. I decided to start writing to teach others to avoid making the same mistakes I made. I discovered my new purpose. Writing it gave me a reason to get up and teach. Other people about my mistakes, Suddenly I realized my life wasn’t wasted after all.

Nowadays, I wake up every morning and start thinking about what lesson I want to pass on. Although writing might not make me rich and famous, it gives me meaning. The satisfaction that I can pass on my wisdom. And that puts a smile on my face.

You’re either growing or you’re dying

A tree that is not growing is dying. You are slowly dying when you are not naturally progressing toward a goal. I don’t know about you, but there were parts of my life when I was working on a significant business venture or project I felt the most alive and accomplished.

I recommend thinking about where you want to be in ten years and working towards it; with all your energy every day, you feel the most happy and satisfied. When I’m not working on a goal, I become more depressed every day, like life passes me by. So start growing today.

How to find your purpose

Is there a purpose?

We hear it over and over. We have to figure out our purpose in life and what we are meant to do here on Earth. Is there even a purpose? Some say no, there isn’t. However, I like to think otherwise.

I had a woman share in a support group not too long ago. She shared a story that when we are just ten years old, we decide what we want to do with our lives. Then we either spend the rest of our lives running toward or away from that purpose. We may pursue our dreams with passion and determination or stop for various reasons.

We may face challenges and obstacles that test our determination or find opportunities and people supporting our vision. I agree with the statement she made for most people.

What is the purpose?

There are many definitions of purpose. There is purpose in your passion and greatness, which brings you joy and fulfillment. There are also many religious views. For example, the Christian view is that god has a purpose for you being here on Earth, and he will reveal it to you.

I like to think of your life purpose in terms of work or a career, and if you enjoy what you are doing and are very good at it, you find ways to make money with it. Purpose in my life is an objective that you enjoy participating in, even if it makes no money for you or it makes you all the money to the point where you don’t have to do it anymore.

You would still wake up every day and do it anyway. It makes you happy, gives you an incredible feeling when time stops, and you can do it forever. You enjoy the activity so much that you do it because it brings you astonishing happiness.

Why have you yet to find your purpose?

Many different things keep you from discovering your purpose, for example, in school. We weren’t taught that our life purpose in terms of career is essential. We are prepared to do what we are good at and what makes the elders in our life proud. We are not taught to listen to ourselves. There is influence from our peers also, so if we don’t have that strong backbone and confidence to pursue our inner desires, they die out by the time we reach adulthood.

How do I find my purpose?

If you don’t recall what you decided when you were ten or even worse, you gave up on it. There is good news the spark hasn’t left you, or will it ever. It is not too late. In my life, I can recall running through a hay field and deciding I wanted to be a martial artist. However, due to a lack of support and encouragement from those around me. I didn’t become a world-star UFC fighter; however, I still do it a few times a week.

I got back into martial arts later in life when it was too late! Uh oh, I spent years thinking about how my life was over, and I had no purpose; however, when I finally got back into it, I found out I like the art of martial arts, not necessarily getting hit in the head part. Through deep thought, meditation, and counseling, I found another way of expressing my art: writing.

My brain triggers the same creative response when I write as getting out of a submission hold. I transitioned, and now I am happier than ever. It is now time to think about what you like doing and how to apply it to something you can do. Don’t let the thought I’m not good enough or it’s too late stop you. That spark is there even though it might be years since you last visited it. Let’s be honest. You already know what you always wanted to do. We all do.

What do I do when I find it?

When you remember and reevaluate your life purpose, give it everything you got. Don’t let the naysayers, aka people around you, stop you or talk you out of it. Even if it will take years to develop, there is a tiny chance of success. No matter how impossible and how far off it may seem. Give it everything you got. Even if you fail, you will be happy trying.
